A Protest of One

Unorganised with a throng of

Tourist hanger-ons

A mish-mash of causes

Battling for their voice to be heard

Support seems minimal

Unintelligible slogans and mottos

Crackle from bullhorns

The policemen seem bored

And my fingers are cold

Helicopter hangs in the air

Filming the ‘police-camera-action’

Police start to leave

Through apparent boredom

Socialist newspapers sold

To those not yet converted

Saturday seems like a stupid day

To march on parliament

They’re all eating sausages

Reading papers

And Egypt’s madness

Is on the lips of the many

Another stock market crash

Urges the believers to keep on truckin

As Nas pumps from speakers

They move ten feet

The Bobbies kick the floor

With obvious boredom

While sight-seeing buses

Crawl past with gaping mouths

This protest is boredom

I followed the throngs

Through miles of suburbia

As a samba drum band

Marches behind their conductor

Through Hyde park corner

Ten people joined hands

Like a human paper chain

Across four lanes of roundabout

Until the peacock lights

Of four police vans

Broke up the fun

With shouts of officialdom

“Get out the road”

“You fucking idiots!”

More traffic stopped

DM boots and Mohawks

Banners and idiots

Their chants falling on deaf ears

Millibank boarded closed

With a hundred strong

Police line

Prohibiting the protestors

Access to the windows

They so badly needed to smash

These cowboy boots

Treat my feet with love

But the nerve in my back

Stays trapped and painful

A protest of muscles

So I leave and find a pub

In money rich Mayfair

To contradict myself.

The protesting hypocrite
