After 3 hours sleep

A taxi picked us up in Brixton

Night was fading

Morning was washing the sky

A deep blue with average clouds

Through 4am London proper

Little chicken joints bursting at the seams

Police on every corner

Their eyes on all the wheels

Rolling along with ethnic skin colours

Behind even more wheels.

Where to steal a little piece

Of all this for myself?

Just a plane ride away

In the smashing grey of dawn

English tourists in their hordes

Filling stansted to death

With pointy hair on heavy heads

My heavy lids sure did blink

Trying to take it all in.

But where to begin

I think I did

Maybe the beer is sending me queer

In the Olde Englishe sense

Really, making little sense

She hates to fly

Maybe it’s the height

She cries and holds on to my hand

Through take-off, flight and land

“That steward is 12!”

She yells

“And he’s supposed to keep me safe!?”

“I’ll keep you safe”

What a fool I am

I relish the thought of a crash land

I want the wing to tip on landing

Smash down to crash landing

Burning wreck on runway

Impossible to run away from fate

But we land with applause

And it pisses me off

For you don’t applaud the cabbie

When he drops you off home.

Glad for the pilots who can’t hear

These god awful human cattle back here

Moo-mooing and baa-baaing

With all that joy in their hearts

If only I could embrace these nonsense trivialities

Maybe I could climb out of my skull

“I wanna get off”

“It’s ok we’re down now”

“But they might take off again”

She makes me smile for miles and miles

This love of mine

And there’s mamma at the gate

This place I hate

More than any other gate

The waving, hugging, kissing, loving

Airport arrivals gate

So I wait, wait until everyone has gone

So I can have this moment

In reality and not shared

With a hundred strangers all rubber-necking

Over their nosey shoulders

And here I am

Land of the masterpiece

Little place by the sea
